Twitcode
Writing Twitter-size code is fun. It all started with Razvan’s tweet-size program that crashes Mac OS, and Adam Dunkels’ twIP, a tiny IP stack implementation (responds to ping correctly!).
After a qsort and bsearch implementation I wrote a tiny web server in Python. It’s only 128 bytes. The html files served must be in the same directory where the script is...

Apollo 11 Mission Tracker →
Follow the journey of the three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins in their fantastic mission of landing on the Moon. This a “live” stream of the entire mission, as it happened, 40 years ago. There are also lots of photos and videos from the mission. We are currently in stage 6, 42 hours away from the landing :). Enjoy!

Star Trek Movies Ratings
Getting ready for the new Star Trek release, I’m thinking to watch some of the old movies first. Here is a view of all the Star Trek movies, as rated by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. I used the scores that were available on May 9. Now, which one should I watch first?

New Year's Resolution
Just because it’s the beginning of a New Year (and on New Year’s day you set resolutions — sometimes crazy resolutions), let me say that in 2009 I will learn how to fly… in Microsoft Flight Simulator. From the solo missions to flying a 747. To make it more challenging (and to have time for a backup plan), I’ll try to do it in half a year :-).
I’m also...
Hyperlinking the Real World →
Life imitating Star Trek is getting better! I imagine pointing the phone camera to an object and getting the wikipedia page for it. Buildings and outdoor objects will suffice though :). The tricorder will soon seem like a toy… ;)
New Tumblr Theme
I discovered another nice theme: ‘Secret Lab’. I changed it just a little bit, to make it wider and the fonts bigger. Also, raluca.musaloiu.com just got a new look! :)
Waiting
for my twitter/facebook/wp feeds to come up. Prepared for see some weird content.
Update: I’m canceling the automatic import as it doesn’t seem to work. I manually added the old WP posts. Let’s do some more testing.

In the Shadow of the Earth
I took this in the beginning of tonight’s total eclipse. It’s adjusted a little bit in Photoshop so the colors are not as they were during the eclipse :).

10 million errors program...
This is what Valgrind told me today while I was debugging a program for somebody:
==9921== More than 10000000 total errors detected. I'm not reporting any more.
==9921== Final error counts will be inaccurate. Go fix your program!
10 million errors… and counting :).

You've received a postcard from...
Without being my birthday, I received in the last few weeks e-cards from 2 unknown family members, 5 partners, 4 worshippers, 1 school-friend, 4 class-mates, 3 school-mates, 2 mates, 3 colleagues, 6 neighbors and 2 friends. In other news, today is System Administrator Appreciation Day, so Happy Sysadmin-ing everyone :).

Safari...
My hopes that Safari will do a better memory management than Firefox were not fulfilled, unfortunately. While browsing with 29 opened tabs in 3 or 4 windows, Safari occupied over 700 MB of memory out of which only 170 MB was shared with other applications. After I restarted it (it crashed, actually), it took only 95 MB of memory with 68 MB shared with other applications…

Nokia 800!
I got my Nokia 770 only 2 weeks ago and Nokia 800 is already out :). Better processor, more memory, support for SD card and other hardware improvements are reported. It costs $400 and it comes with Internet Tablet OS 2007 Edition, which unfortunately is not supported on 770…
Meanwhile, I noticed the rebooting issue on my 770 is happening quite often (I have the newest firmware)....

OS 2007 on 770 - hacker edition
It didn’t take long for the maemo community to make the OS 2007, currently available only for Nokia 800, run on the old 770. The firmware images are not available yet, and some major issues are still investigated, but the current status, as reported on the maemo wiki is quite promising :).
Chat with the Dell Support
I had a more than 2 hours chat the Dell support, trying to figure out a way to recover Windows XP installation, in case we’ll want it back after trying Vista ;). The confusion started because our system, a Dimension 5150, did not come with any CDs, and we also don’t have an OS Recovery CD software which builds an XP installation CD from the hidden partition. It turns out that there is (or there...
Switching to Safari?
Despite applying all kind of tricks to speed up my Firefox, I have to temporary give up on it, and search for alternatives.
I’m trying Safari now, and here are some things I can’t live without:
support for quick searches in address bar. Luckly, SafariSIA does what I want, but not as easily as the built-in feature from Firefox which takes only 2 seconds to set-up.
to switch between...
More on 770
I installed some basic programs: xterm, dropbear, mc, pine and a few other utilities. I also put Canola hoping it will provide an easy way to organize my music, without having to build playlists file by file.
I have few “complains” so far:
for some reason, sometimes it reboots itself… I have no idea why…
the power button can be hit too easy when working with the device...
Accessing Nokia 770
Following the maemo guide I installed xterm, dropbear and I than I got root access. I changed the password and added the ‘user’ to the sudors file. I also changed the root password which was ‘rootme’ and I’m thinking to disable remote root access. I couldn’t resist not to put the Star Trek theme and I added the Star Trek sounds pack also. I like it a lot :).
"Do as I say"
Here is a nice message I got on my 770, when I was trying to install net-tools:
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 112 to remove and 6 not upgraded.
Need to get 256kB of archives.
After unpacking 30.2MB disk space will be freed.
You are about to do something potentially harmful.
